So I bought a Ford 4000 diesel engine 4 cylinder. The guy I bought if from said it was on a trencher. I've searched and searched and searched but still no luck with finding a Ford 4000 trencher. Anyone know anything about these. My goal is to turn it into a 13kw back up generator for my shop/home. It is definitely not a tractor set up because the clutch pedal is on the right side of the engine and sticks out at close to a 90 degree angle from the odd shaped transmission. Thanks

It was likely the power plant on a trencher not built by Ford. Ford sold a number of engines as power plants for others equipment.

4000 diesel would be the same as a 4000 tractor. My Hydra Mac skid loader has a 172 ci ford engine in it.
Pal of mine digs wells, several of his trenchers have ford engines in them. . |

Were the 4000 diesels 4 cylinder in U.S. and Canada? Down here the British built versions were all 3 cylinder. Just curious.

Ford 4000 diesel tractors 1964 and earlier are 4 cylinder engines that are basically a converted gas engine. The 1965 and later engines were a totally redesigned engine built as a HD diesel and the gas engines of the same time had a spark plug head for them on the same block. the 2000,3000 & 4000 were 3 cylinder and 5000 & 7000 were 4 cylinders.

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY |

I think PaulB meant the '65 and after were 3 cylinders.

Thanks for the information. I'll post some pictures later. I think what is throwing me off I'd the "hood" says ford 4000. I will have to start a project thread when I get going on turning it into a generator. Any input in 5hat project will be appreciated as well.

They very early "4000"s were the same tractor as the last of the 900 series.

Generator engines typically have a special or unique governor that is tuned to hold the rpms necessary for 60 cycle power output, i.e 1800 rpm, 3600 rpm depending on the generator.
