Drained old fluid out of the 3 plugs on bottom of tractor. Forward most was Hydraulic reservoir, behind it, at an angle is PD, this was very milky, and low. Drained, filled with a couple quarts and drained again. Filled (7/8" Hex left of shifter).

Then came the trans. Had gear oil in it, but was mighty low. Did the same fill partially, let sit and then drain again. I believe I've filled all of them properly, and it doesn't "whine" now like before. It creeps though. I believe I've put about 5 gallons into the trans (through the breather right of the shifter)

Is gear oil that much better that even low, it didn't creep?

Well you are thinking about it wrong. The correct clean oil is much thicker than watered down and low oil. This produces more drag and thus will often allow the tractor to creep while the power director is in neutral. Very often this is most noticeable when the oil is cold. When it warms up with use you might see that the creeping is much reduced or gone completely.

What fluid did you put back in?  Heavier oils will cause more drag in the Power Director and you would see more creep.

Check your power steering oil up in front behind grill. A much neglected oil change and much needed as those pumps are very expensive when you can find a good one. There is no filter so all the more reason to change frequently......... unless you don't have power steering but there is still oil in there for steering gear. And don't forget your final drives.

Thank you Lonn,

I intend to do the final drives in the next week or so.

On the power steering-

it appears as though this did have power steering at one time but there's no hoses going up to that front gearbox and I don't know where they would come from or where I would plug them into the tractor to get the fluid going to find out why somebody eliminated it. Any suggestions?

Is there a pump between the distributor and governor? That's where the pump would be if it has PS. Distributor bolts directly to rear of pump.

Thank you again Lonn - there is not a pump between the distributor and governed. Bummer.

Though/ question - if I were to add true live hydraulic, as I've been thinking about doing, any reason I couldn't run my power steering off of that? It'd give me the ability to add a filter at least :)

Thanks for looking and responding fellas

Jimmy

If you do not hav ethe pump then you don't have any of the rest of the components needed for power steering, but with money and time anything can be done.
