    Posted: 16 Sep 2016 at 2:53pm
I have a 1955 WD-45, recently bought, mainly because it's what I learned to drive on and I just wanted one:)  I also recently went thru the flooding in Livingston Parish, LA.  Water up to about 4-6 inches over frame, don't think it got to oil filter.  I pulled the engine oil plug and about 4 gal of water gushed out:(   Ran a quart of oil thru it to get what water I could get out, then filled.  But, couldn't start, I think the starter got some water though I did get it to hit once but then dead.  So, think I need to replace starter and generator just to get the engine started.  And of course I need to change all other fluids before driving.  Since I'm new to antique tractors, looking for advice on flushing and what should be done to get'er back to running well.  Also wondering if anyone does restoration work?  Was in good working condition before the flood. Thanks in advance!!

Go to the top of this page and select "parts etc" Look for B&B Custom Circuits and give Steve a call. He can rebuild both your starter and the generator. My only other suggestion is to remove the spark plugs to be sure no water is inside the cylinders before trying to start it again. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Did the engine turn over? If not, you may have water ton top of a piston.
I would say your first step is to remove the spark plugs and turn the engine over with the crank.

Thanks Stan/WF.  Pretty sure water didn't get that high but I will check plugs.  Engine did not turn, starter did hit once, kinda like someone hit it with a hammer but it didn't extend.  I couldn't get it to engage at all sitting on the seat and I had got down and was tapping it and mashing the button with my thumb when it engaged, scared the heck outa me, lol.

Kinda sounds like water in engine when starter hits like that. Get plugs out as the others have said. Turn by hand.

Once you get it to turn over without the plugs in. Pull the cap and and check the pionts. If the points looks good I would pull the carburetor off and drain the gas out by simply tipping it up on end with the air inlet pointing down. Then check that gas flows out of the line to the carb and that it is good gas. Wouldn't surprise me to find that there is water in the gas tank from the rain even if it didn't go under water. The filler necks can leak on these old tractors.   Once you know you have good fuel then try the starter again. If it doesn't start pull a plug and check for spark. If you know it will turn over by hand and you know you have fuel at the carb I would consider tow starting it. I wouldn't crank start it by hand. I would only crank it by hand with the plugs out. If they misfire or backfire you can get seriously hurt with a hand crank.
Welcome to the forum.   Good luck bringing the old girl back to life.

I would definitely pull the plugs as suggested and crank over by hand just to make sure there isn't anything in cylinders. Sorry to hear you were one of the victims of the flood. A lot of devastation there I've seen on TV. We can do your Starter and Gennie over if need be. Ma' man Stan keeping me in mind. Thanks Stan!  There might be fish in them two units!

Oh take the bottom off the oil bath air cleaner and dump that out and put in fresh 30 weight oil up to the fill line. I have seen those get full of water and suck the water in filling one cylinder with water and locking the motor. Make sure you have a good mushroom cap on the air cleaner and a good flapper or can on the exaust when it is not running. If water gets into the bottom of the oil bath air cleaner it will rust them out in time seen more then one of those.

No one has mentioned it yet but make sure you have a known good battery and clean all battery connections. You got to have good juice for that starter.

I believe if it was mine and it had that much water in the crankcase I'd do something about flushing the engine before starting it. I think I'd put in a pint of alcohol, a qt. of oil and the rest kerosene. Pull the plugs and tow it at a very moderate speed which will blow the water out of the cylinders without compression which is bad if there is a lot of water in there. By the way the alcohol causes the water to blend well enough that it will drain out better. Do that with hyd. gear boxes, anything with oil. You're not only trying to get out the water, but the sand that gets in there. You might even flush it twice because that sand is bad stuff. Watch your oil pressure real close too. It's better to repair small things than big things. That's a gimme.

Thanks everyone, great advice indeed!!! Already Changed out the air breather oil. The battery is good but I think the connection at the starter could use some cleaning. This week I will continue and do the plugs and fuel/gas and turn over. On the final drive/back tires, there is a plug for oil level but don't think there are drain plugs, thinking I should pull those bottom pans off and check for water and re-fill. Great forum, thanks guys!!

That is 80 - 90 weight gear oil in the finial drives same can be used in the transmission.   The torque tube takes hydraulic oil.

Does it have power steering?   If so that is a separate hydraulic oil system.

Negative on the power steering. The manual says diff, clutch, trans takes 17q 80EP... but that doesn't include the final drives does it?
