 Topic: Floating Pond Algae

1/2 acre shallow pond. I am ate up with floating algae this year. Stuff I am using (diuron, copper sulfate, various cure alls from Farm and Home) is not working well at all. Any chemicals recommended for success in this endeavor? Since it did not work on the neighbors pond, I am not gonna try barley straw for grins.
Would appreciate any leads to chemicals that worked.
Oh, I also keep blue dye in the water. Thaanx

Couple of old car batteries submerged work well at controlling algae but it is slow. Elevating the acid level with sulfuric will also do it but fish if you have them don't take to it well. Motor around the pond with a trolling motor as you slowly pour the acid into the water and prop wash to help agitate it for faster knockdown.

I use a mixture of copper sulfate, Diquat and a surfactant in a back pack sprayer. It works well for me.

The county park next to me has a couple electric powered aerators that seem to work well, I've seen an ad somewhere for ones that have a windmill to run it.

Aerators work well but use a lot of electricity if very large. Not bad if a politician spending other folk's money, but when you have to pay for it by the lonesome.....
Installed many aerator systems for cooling water and retention ponds in another life.

Dave, try Jones Fish Lake Management. Their catalog is best I have seen at identifying and what to use to kill it.Their website is a great help too. They have a find my pond size from a satellite view also. Invaluable info on ponds and lakes! HTH Tracy

Aquazine does a great job. Simizine, princep, same thing, 1/2 price, not labeled, I didn't tell you that. they do kill vegetation along the edge of water though. If chemicals are used be careful, too much decaying algae at one time depletes oxygen and can kill your fish . I stated using grass eating carp last year, they are doing a great job. I think I put too many in one pond, the water in it stays dingy in it, expensive but so far so good.

Thanks for all the info folks. I am gonna be chasing down some different chemicals today, Of all the luck, the motor seized up in the aerator yesterday.

we use to use barley straw to MAINTAIN the algae at a LOW level... Not good at getting rid of large quantities... You need the copper sulfate or others to KILL the stuff... Some things are good for killing, others (barley) just keep it from coming back or spreading.

You must identify your weed/algae. Where I am we have Duckweed as the floating problem.
Neither copper sulfate nor Diuron work on Duckweed.
