Dad picked one ear field corn two days ago for dinner and man was it good!
It was to long to fit in the pot so he broke it in two, you can guess the one I had. lol
We try to get one or two helpings of field corn to eat per year. I have planted sweet corn but the coons get it before I do and I have more then a nuff field corn to feed both of us. lol

Field corn is very good when you pick it at the right time when the kernals are still filled with milk.
Mant years ago my Dad would walk across the road and check the corn for milk. On the right day we had it with supper. Very Good!!!! |

I dont know how you managed it this year Don! Down here, you would have to pick a field of corn to get enough for a meal. There is a lot of corn being cut for silage down here, and a lot more that you really hate to look at when you drive by. We hadnt been away from home for a while, and were really down about how our corn looked, but I had some business to run my 100 miles or so 2 different directions from home, and I didnt see any corn that I would be any prouder of. Hopefully we can get some rain so we can have some beans this year..

Hmmmmmmmmmm, lot of local rumors as to what that hybred corn will do to you :-)
We always ate it as kids. Maybe that is the cause of all of my issues, to include antique tractors.

Worked in Venezuela for a while and they would take field corn (not sweet corn available) in the milky stage and put it thru a meat grinder, add a little sugar and make pancakes. Those were the best with a little cheese, scrumpdili-isious....

IT'S started to RAIN at my place!!!
I needed it very bad too, have not seen rain for a month now; this just made my corn crop for me THANK GOD!
You know what to do when comes to planting a crop but it takes the man up stairs to make it grow!

Most of the folks who like Field Corn around here don't eat it off the cob like you do sweetcorn. They cut uncooked field corn kernals of the cob and scrape the cob into a cast iron skillit of hot bacon grease. They say it's messy but very good fried this way.
I have tried to enjoy field corn on the cob and can't yike it that way. I enjoy sweet corn on the cob any way you can fix it. Raw, roasted in the shuck, microwaved in the shuck or shucked and shucked and boiled.
Why is this posted up here in Farm Equiment?

Field corn has a corn flavor that's been bred out of sweet corn. You do have to catch it just right and the old cook books recommend you put the pot on to boil before you go to the field to pick the corn, that you shuck the corn on the way back, and hit the boiling water as soon as you can to preserve the sweet.
