F3 perforated sieve

I should know this. On the F3 cleaning shoe is the perforated sieve ALWAYS used in corn and soybeans? Or is this not needed at all, running only the chaffer and adjustable sieve?

A Deere guy is asking me.

Thank you both! My mechanic and I continue to try to figure out why I have occasional grain leakage at the front of the shoe when it is running full or on a sidehill. He asked me what that screen was for, it's coming out.

Excessive grain into fan housing is caused by overfilling the cleaning shoe(chaffer/sieve). This can be caused by numerous dynamics
-higher grain moistures(let it dry down more),
-higher grain yields(lucky you!)
-terrain{hills}(add a hillside blower kit or if it already has one, then service it for constant air pressure).
-choked chaffer/sieve(open them up to allow max grain flow while limiting trash in sample),
-choked fan setting(open all the way),
-slow clean grain auger(speed up kit),
-worn/missing paddles on clean grain elevator.(service it),
-straw walkers position( forward or backward),
-etc, etc, etc.....).
I’d add excessive machine forward speed, but if it’s header & threahing(cylinder/concave) are keeping up & doing well, then reducing forward travel speed is counter productive. BUT, if you can’t remedy all the other limiting dynamics, then yes, you are forced to slow down forward travel.

The perforated screen was to let out the weed seed and such fines... why dump weed seed it on your ground - sell it!  :-)  The later model Corn and soybean models did not have perforated screens... some customers demanded it so it was an option for a few years but finally dropped.  We always told customers never remove the 'cookie sheet' for two reasons, 1 it is not needed 99% of time and 2 it always got lost and was never to be found when we traded it back in -- had to buy / make a bunch in  40 years... to make them go in wheat...  grrr

they also had perforated door boots and unloader tubes..
