What causes a sort of "tsk" noise from the exhaust at idle? It's on the 8N. (Well Creston, the way you fix that is to junk the 8N and get an Allis! Yes, I know....Lol) I can try an upload a video if need be. But at idle it just sits there and makes a slight "tsk" or maybe a kind of sucking noise. I'm thinking there might be a valve out of adjustment? If so, that's a pain to fix on this tractor, because it doesn't have the adjustable lifters that the later 8N's had. You have to take the valves loose (as well as the head, and consequently the gas tank and hood) and file some off the end of the stem. Yay...

Co workers 9N had a bad Tisk noise. would only run on three. I took the side cover plates off sprayed it down with Deep Creep turned it over and lightly tapped the valve stem with a brass punch. It worked on his it was stuck from sitting for many years. It ran good after that and is still running. If i would have bent or broke a Valve stem it was comming apart anyway.

IIRC, been a bunch of years now, if you got go to all the trouble and while you are in there you can pull the lifter and insert an adjustable one.
i vaguely recall that i got both kinds in mine but cannot remember the ratio. ![]() |

run a compression test on it before you start taking it apart. If one or more cylinders are low get that piston on the top of the compression stroke then hook an air hose to that spark plug hole and see where the air comes out. exhaust pipe=exhaust valve. carburater=intake valve. crankcase vent =rings.

You're welcome, Ted! Actually, Mom likes the 8N! I'm not going to say she calls it "small", but it's more of "just the right size" for a gal...Lol Oh, and I have checked for manifold leaks, and that proved inconclusive. I don't care for how the manifold is attached on those machines. Seems a leak could happen easier than if it were held on like on the Alis's. (Yeah, just shot myself again there, didn't I?)

not eating anything gassy before ya climb on the tractor are ya???lol. my 8n started with a noise like that at low idle and just got worse, then while cutting hay it (the tractor not me)started to really burp and fart, barley made it back to the garage. exhaust valve stuck. replacing the valve was the easy part. had to take the loader off, all the tin, gas tank came off with the tin! all to replace a valve.
I mentioned it on a previous post, but I was so mad I forgot to put the valve spring compressor on and when I pulled the retainer clip the valve shot out of the block and hit the tin roof.....sure glad I wasn't looking down at the valve when that happened!! ![]() |

If you want to tear the whole engine apart you can install adjustable lifters. Maybe someone already has installed them. It takes a special wrench to hold the bottoms still to adjust them. You can also install adjustable lifters in the Model F and N Fordsons. My F has them in it now.
Thanks Ken |

It's made this noise for a while, and it has never got worse, just kind of annoying at idle.
Ken, it doesn't have adjustable lifters in it. Guess I need to put them in. Sure would make a world of difference!

Until you actually run a compression test, you are totally speculating that there might be something wrong.

Cal, Lol!
Yes, I need to do another compression test. After the overhaul it had 110# in all 4.
