If it is truly from a D-17 tractor, the letter on the end of the s/n will be "M" and I can't see what it is for sure. A tractor engine will not have a hole in the block below the engine oil filter for a fuel pump to attach. If the letter code is a "Z" and there is a hole for a fuel pump that is covered with a plate, that engine is from a Gleaner model "E-3" or a late model "E".  M code is 7.25 to 1 compression ratio. Z code is 8.0 to 1 compression ratio.

Thanks all for the help. It is indeed an m code engine. Until it was pointed out that it was a 17 I thought the first marking was a z
