Probably been answered before, but what engines will bolt in to a B, besides a BE and CE engine?
Such as D14 149", D10-12 138", D10-12 149'', D15 149", D15 160", ??
My winter project low B with a 6' mower needs an engine, be nice to find a 138 CI, or 149 CI engine for it. I don't want to put $ in the current engine (in poor condition) as it's a BE 116 CI, and not quite the power needed anyway.
Thanks Bill B

The 149 will likely be the most bang for your buck, but all that you mentioned will work with little effort.

I believe the 149 D14 engine is a bolt in. Not sure on what's needed for clutch/flywheel combo if needed, but that would make that little B rock n' roll. You'll mow some grass wit dat little bugger then Bill dat's fir sure!  Thumbs Up

If you are looking for power this B has a 201 from a WC.

The series III D-10 has the 149 engine in it.

A 138/149 engine will bolt up to a B, but you must use the flywheel, pressure plate, and clutch (8 1/2") from the B fo it to work. You will have more power from a 149 then from a 201. You might find that you will have more power then your B will know what to do with. A D14 is about double the weight of a B. You might also reduce you tranny and rear end gears to a pile of metal. The 116 engine came from the factory with a mag, but 70+ years later it could be wearing most any other option. Bob

With everything Bob said it may be wiser to go with a 201 in instead of the more powerfull 149. You should be able to find a 201 more readily given it's production numbers and the lower compression ratio of the 201 makes it easier on starters.

I would be surprised if a fresh 125 wouldn't handle that mower. Most that I've been around will make 25-30 HP, and way more low end torque than a Kohler/Kawasaki powered zero turn mower. A 201 would require an adapter plate at both ends and significant work in the flywheel and clutch department.

The 149 dressed in D14 clothes made about 36 HP at the PTO. Later versions like the D15 series I made more.

A 149 will bolt right in, a 201 will require a lot on modifications. Bob
