Several years ago, maybe 10, I became the owner of a WD-45 with a replacement motor of some sort; a someday project.  It must be higher displacement or higher compression than a stock motor since the 12 volt battery I use on the other WD-45 and WD won't turn it over. A bigger battery works OK. Motor spins freely with the starter when the plugs out. It ran fine when I got it but had a bigger battery. Someone previously cut the battery box to accommodate a larger battery. I don't think I have a ground problem.
The left side of the block has "G7L" cast into it and the right side is marked "AM-3858-2" with a "3" beneath. Does anyone know if this tells what the motor is or know where I can find the information to find out?
I think it may be about time to dig this tractor out of the shed and get it going again.
Many Thanks for any help. Russell.

Back up a couple feet, Russ, take another picture of it from each side, so we can see it's external features, head/valve cover, etc...
Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.

While you're out there taking pictures from a ways back, look for the engine number It will be STAMPED on the block, not cast like these casting numbers.

Look directly behind the air cleaner to carburetor hose and you will see a serial number stamped on the block. It will be W-xxxxxx (WC/WD engine) or 45-xxxxxx (WD45 engine) or 17-xxxxxx ( a D-17 engine).
