Dad had an electrician out to do some trouble-shooting today (neighbor no $$ exchanged) and admittedly was perplexed with the readings he was getting with his meter, fluctuating voltage across the hot bars and then the dropping of a leg and gaining 240 volts on a single pole breaker under load. The issue/fix turned out to be 11' above the barns' breaker box, 5 of the 7 aluminum strands of the feeder neutral were broken off at the "weather head" Confused . Dad had a leftover  strand of the same wire that we scavenged to make the repair Smile . Aside from several blown light bulbs and my DeWalt jobsite radio getting fried, all turnud out pretty well Clap . Thanks to EVERYONE that put  in their info !!

Nice, at least it's FIXED ! 11' is a lot better than 40' up!
You should look at the entire run, check all boxes, connections, etc. Maybe take pictures of where the wires go....
I helped 1/2 day in a 2 car garage and it was NOT fun. Would have been cheaper to yank ALL the old out and wire NEW copper.

I was willing to bet BIG $$ that a re-wire was in the VERY- NEAR- Future LOL!! Thanks again to all !! Yes, after a hard frost, there is a place where the O/H wires are suspect to a viney bush that dad has let run amok up an old corn crib that serves as a "pole" between the bin and barn.

Good to hear you got it fixed. The neutral is the most important of the 3 wires. If you Lose either of the other 2 hot wires, half of the building will be out. No big deal. When you lose the neutral anything 120 volts don't fare well when it gets too much voltage. which is almost everything in a house. TVs,computers, all kinds of expensive stuff.
If you ever have bright/dim lights blowing bulbs arcing or smoking in appliances turn off the main breaker or all breakers, disconnect etc. until issue is fixed.Hopefully that will save some costly replacements to your appliances etc.

Something else I've seen over the years is power strips or surge protectors that your devices plug into. You see lots of them behind TVs or computer desk. When a neutral is lost and there is 240V going into the 120V strip they heat up. A lot of times they are sitting on carpet and has caught the carpet on fire.
So think about devices that are sitting on something that could combust easily. I've also seen things plugged in up inside attics that catches insulation on fire.
Hopefully that helps someone from an event like that happening.
