The 7040 had a two pinion differential, while the 7045 has the four pinion differential.

There are a lot of good improvements/refinements the black belly tractors. The 7045 has them all. In my opinion the most debatable is the power director transmission shift lever on the floor on the 7040 (simple but in the way on the floor) or the 7045 shifter in the console (open floor space  but slightly more complex cable arrangement). I like them both but the prefer the 7045.

Maybe reflect about it this way?

7030,7040,7045,8030.
All 4 have the non-intercooled, turbo-charged AC 426(3500II-670T) Diesel engines. The 7000 series had the Roosa-Master fuel injection pump while the 8000 series had the AmBach M-100. The later year, or so 7045s have the Bosch injectors, earlier years have AC injectors.

Years built, pto hp, compression ratio, number built, as follows;
73-74’ 7030 @ 131hp, 16.0-1, 3396 built,
74-77’ 7040 @ 136hp, 16.0-1, 7280 built,
78-81’ 7045 @ 146hp, 16.0-1, 3908 built,
81-85’ 8030 @ 134hp, 15.5-1, 2328 built.

7045 received acoustic cab II with smaller/shallower steering wheel (14”dia. x4 1/2”dish vs older15 7/8”dia.x6 7/8”dish), improved cab steps, & optional stadium lights.

Either 20 speed T-handle Power Director or 12 speed Power Shift transmission were available. 7045 has the larger 7060’s power train(4/2 PD plates(low/high), 4 pinion differential, differential lock, & 5.41:1 final drive ratio. Earlier 7030/7040s had 3/2 PD plates, 2 pinion, & 5.6:1 final drive ratio.

Corporate Orange with a tad of red, replaced Persian Orange #2. Their cast bellies were painted black instead of the original maroon color. And, wheels & cab roof became white, replacing the older cream colors.

A 7045 is exactly the same tractor as a 7060 (of the same age) minus the intercooler and has a 7040 sized radiator.

Good write-up on this. The 7045 also had the optional luxury seat and the stadium light package came with the crummy remote mirrors and a larger alternator. Late tractors also had two fuel filters and an electric fuel pump. That system wasn't necessary in my opinion. First year black belly tractors (1978) used a steel fuel tank. Later ones were plastic.

How about the radiators in the 7045, 7060, and the 7080? Are any of them the same size or when they step up the horsepower, did they step up the radiators as well? I have an inter-cooler on my 7045. It came off of an N6.

Radiators are different on all three. More HP needs a higher capacity radiator. Intercoolers on 7045's can cause heating issues on HOT days at high HP output.

Mr Marshall, Doctor Allis, thank you. That explains a lot. When I was spraying, the temp gauge wanted to climb on those HOT day. I would stop and rest her for a while and we got along fine.

Spraying? Not sure what you're pulling for a sprayer, but doubtful that should make it hot even when hot out.

All the usual things apply: Is the foam intact? Is the radiator clean, inside and out? Head gasket good, temp gauge correct, etc.

Also don't know what you define as "climb".

The 7045 has two gauges, factory and factory N6. I got the 4 gauges out a a combine years ago. The fuel/temp is the one that wanted to go to the red and I don't trust it much. It moves around to much. I had M&W's put in it years ago and added the inter-cooler at that time.

The sprayer is a Top Air 1600. I don't put more then 1200 in at a time. The field I was in is a long uphill grade to the North. But when you think about the weight, the hydraulic pump, and the heat of the day, it should heat up.

Yep, sounds like a pretty good load.

Interesting that it shows the 7045 being the only 2wd to have an 8 blade fan. Didn’t know 8 blades were ever a thing on the 7000 series.

That's because the radiator was really too small for 145 HP, so they tried more air instead, which draws more trash and harder to keep the radiator clean.
