Ear VRS Stalk Color ?

Haven't pulled any ears yet to get a sample,but the ears on our late planted 104 day corn are "mostly" white and "turning down" yet the majority of the stalk is still greenish- NOT  spinach green though. If the grain is tolerable moisture wise to run, is there an issue with the green stalks going through the combine ??

I say no...and most of that stalk is not supposed to get to the combine....you will get some tops

Like Steve says, shouldn't be many stalks going through.  "Tolerable moisture"....what have you got?  Can you take a sample in to have moisture and TEST WEIGHT checked?  Moisture can be dried down, if you have crappy test weight, it is immature.  Of course there isn't much weather left to help you on that front.  They say it's cheaper to dry then to let the birds, coons, deer, and weather take yield from you.  Look at the big picture, and if the combine will separate it, make a decision.

The seed corn and bean companies have developing hybrids that will dry the crop on the stem or stalk so they will still be standing nice and tall when you get there with your harvester. I go and get samples of ears of my corn fields to get an idea where the moisture is and make a decision from there. Now beans, I walk out in them and pop some pods open and try to push my fingernail into the bean to see how soft it is and go from there.

Hahaha....yeah, in theory. Until they have a hybrid that sets ears only above 8 feet and has the stalk strength of an 8 inch oak, the deer, bear, and coons really decimate corn this time of year. Once they do that, they’ll have to work on having it sense birds and have it wiggle or make a bang or something to shoo the birds away.

Thanks for the input, I mis-spoke about the "stalks through the combine",should have said corn head, black 430 on an F2. I have not been out to the farm for a week so no sample ears pulled yet. Sadly the bin is still full of last years corn,contracted to be hauled/sold within the next week and half.
