 Topic: Dumb question of the day

I'm too old for such a stupid question but here goes--- My D-17 ser.3 gas has been sitting all winter in a non heated barn on level floor and not started any. Took battery off when parked and have kept it charged in shop. I'm wanting to change engine oil & filter. Would it be OK to drain oil as is or should I start it and let it run a few minutes in case there's any condensation inside engine? Either way I plan on letting drain overnight. Thanks for opinions!!!!

I would start it and let it warm up and then shut off and drain oil.

Agreed.........starting it and letting it warm up COMPLETELY will drive off any water condensation inside the block. Then drain and change as normal.

I fully agree with running it for a while before draining the oil. That will get the condensation out and give the oil a chance to circulate throughout the system. Give those Kentucky Riflemen my best. Kentucky and Tennessee furnish the best Natural Riflemen to the Army. They surely made me look good. Saved my neck more than once. Good Luck! Bill Long

Aside from the condensation it's better to change them warm. Picks up more contaminates so they can be drained out.

99.5% (swag) of people will advise you to warm up and change oil. Me too. I heard one source claim to drain it cold "because all the settled crap is right there by the plug". One vehicle I owned was the worst, because if the engine ran any longer than a few seconds, you couldn't get the filter off without burning your arm. So it was the worst of both worlds, you couldn't warm it up, and you had to start it go get under it! phhhhttt!

If you are really worried about circulating settled water from the oil pan back up into the engine, which from your barn description I wouldn't be, you could loosen the drain plug, until JUST BEFORE it comes all the way out. By loosening the plug and threading it most of the way out, but not taking it all the way out, most of the time will show water IF there is any settled on the bottom. If oil drops start to come out first, there is no water settled. Either way, like others have said, run that thing, get it good and up to operating temp, let is run for an extra 15 mins or so that way, and then shut it off, and right away, drain the oil, don't wait any time at all, have your buckets ready, and drop the plug as soon as you shut off the tractor.
Occasionally when we have left a well power unit out in the field all winter, we will do this, before we run it, and then change the oil.
I actually like to change the oil after a long day of field work. Drive it into the yard or shop, let it idle until I have everything ready, then shut it down, and go to work. This will ensure that anything that will come out is in the oil solution, and not sitting somewhere

When he was in high school buddy worked for a guy who pulled the plug untill the water was purged and was getting just oil. Put the plug in and topped her off and off to the field he was sent. Hmmm bucket or rain flap over the exhaust might have been a good idea. Tractor was a Moline
