As I never served, what information is on ‘dog tags’ that G.I.’s wear?
The reason I asked is, was digging in the garden this morning and pulled what appears to identification tags of some sort, two of them on a chain, name, SS#, and religion stamped into what maybe tin. |

I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

there were several variations before and during WW2...... Much more simple now... Should also contain blood type..
-------- towards the end of 1967, the Army announced its intention to drop the use of Army Serial Numbers! Between 1967 and 1969, before switching to Social Security Numbers, most Identification Tags had both indications, i.e. ASN + SSAN! Finally ASNs were dropped June 30, 1969, and as such the new data (on Dog Tags) looked as follows: 1st line = SURNAME, 2d line = FIRST NAME + INITIAL, 3d line = SOCIAL SECURITY ACCOUNT NUMBER, 4th line = BLOOD TYPE + RHESUS FACTOR, 5th line = RELIGION. Although the Rhesus factor was already discovered in 1940, its indication was only introduced after World War 2 (blood types embossed on the Identification Tag during the war period included: A – AB – B – O).

Yup, mine also has blood type. Earlier ones used a Service Number, but during my era (1976-1980) we used our actual Social Security Number. This was required on all of our mail, etc. so everyone who handled our mail had access to our SSN. I understand that now they have gone back to a separate Service Number. |

Don't forget the notch in the outer rim of tag
the one that fits between front teeth , (why there were 2 tags) One stayed on long chain other short chain for other placement |
