Started to work on the CA I recently picked. While checking into the ignition system I noticed that the distributor has a lot of slop in it . I am speaking of the metal shaft which rotates.

I suspect that this happens with age... It there a rebuild kit for the distributor? or does it not really matter

It only matters if you want it to run right. LOL I'm sure they can be rebuilt. I don't know about kits though.

Valu-Bilt has rebuilt distributors. Like Charlie says a sloppy dist shaft causes unwanted dwell and timing changes. It will never run quite right if you leave as is. One thing I was told long ago by an old A-C dealer was take the shaft out and drive out the bushing in the dist housing. Cut the bushing in two, reverse the halves, and drive them back in. This will probably help. It did on mine for a few years, but I ended up replacing it anyway.

Steve at B&B,  on this forum could do it for you. Or maybe supply the parts you need to do it yourself.

Hello Turbo  Is The slop  rotational or sideways???? The rotational slop is the advance,  the sideways is the bushings put a dwell meter on it to see how steady it is.

The slop is rotational, I would estimate it to be a few degrees.. I noticed this when I started looking into the weak spark. This is my first tractor besides my Cub Cadet ( 1 cylinder kolhers) I am used to working on cars and I have never see a distributor rotate like this before.. however they were all electronically controlled for advance.

The shaft feel tight axially it is just that it has a few degrees of rotation.... so this is the mechanical advance on this distributer?

I have the parts book and service manual for the tractor but it is a xmas present so I have to wait

Thanks for the help!

You should be able to twist the shaft a little. That's the mechanical advance. If the shaft wobbles much in the bushing, that's a problem.

That is good news for me as I can mark that off my list of things the tractor will need.

Thanks for helping a novice!

As the guys mentioned, if you can move the shaft side to side, the Distributor needs to be rebuilt. If you grab the main shaft and can twist it a little, you're moving the advance weights which would be normal. We rebuild Distributors, offer parts, and E.I.'s for them also if interested. I don't offer a bushing kit for them, only because I size the Oillite bushing ID/OD to the main shafts & housings. All units get run on a 504 Sun machine before being shipped. All of our points type units use Standard "Blue Streak" tune up parts in them. I also offer a recurved unit for the puller fans...
