A quick video of us digging potatoes with an old horse drawn potato plow attached to the draw bar of my '38 B. That's my 16 y.o. son manning the plow; good thing hes got long legs!

Runamuck, THat is nearly the exact same plow as I use, somebody cut the handles off mine, and converted it to 3 point hitch, before I spent $75 on it. Do you (or anyone else) know what brand it is? It's a pretty good digger, the way mine is set up, you adjust the toplink, and when you have it right, taters just roll back into the opened row, pretty clean, too...

That's pretty cool but I have to ask, did he lose a bet? Or was it one of those "I'm man enough to do anything" Kinda moments? I remember several of those. Dad was always there afterwards to say "I bet you won't try that again"

Thanks for making that a link. I didn't know how to do that. Not sure on the make, a friend of mine spotted it at a yard sale and knew I needed one. First time we used it we didn't go deep enough, this time went a little too deep. He thinks hanging on to the plow beats digging them all with a fork. It turned several hours a row into several seconds.

That beings back a few memories of when we dug potatoes using the plow. At first the kids were having fun finding the treasure (the potatoes), but after the 2nd year the fun was gone and it be came work. LOL Thanks for sharing.

I still enjoy sifting through the dirt for taters with my hands after plowing the taters out. Missed doing it this year. The cancer surgery at tater digging time kept me out of doing lots of things I enjoy at that time of year.

I use a plain old horse drawn walk behind "Middle Buster" without that contraption out the back that is supposed to do WHAT? Wife drives while I plow. It is always a good idea to pull up the tater vines by hand before plowing. That way there is nothing there to "plug up"
I sure don't have half the trouble walking the furrow as the youngster in the video. And I'm 75. Papa needs to throttle back a notch or two maybe. Edited by Ken in Texas - 20 Oct 2015 at 1:17pm |

We have a potato digger just like that my dad remade it to hook up to our "B" Allis to the plow hitch . It lifts with the hydraulics on the rock shaft and you can set the depth with the plow depth lever. Works great!!

On that particular digger, there is a cog wheel and a roller, that follows the cog, and shakes the table that's attached to the follower wheel, and hinged, just behind the shoe. Really works well, as long as the angle to the ground isn't too steep in front. A real piece of early ground powered engineering...

We had a single-row potato digger that Dad had mounted on the SC of the D17.
Don't know what it came from...looked like a lister or furrow-opener....there were 2 sides like in the vid. Whatever it was, it was mounted to a heavy plow beam and a loop was made for the SC hook. It worked great. Cool autumn weather......still remember picking up a tater, cleaning off the dirt and enjoying a late afternoon snack. |

We still have some bugs to work out, but I got a rock shaft for the B so the plan is to mount the plow either hand or hyd lift. It was set a little deep and is unstable the way it is. I will get some pictures of it out of the ground tomorrow if I get time. I picked up a pto and hyd pump that needs to be gone through; is there anyone I could just send it to and get it back ready to go? Thanks for all the comments, it's fun to actually contribute something instead of just lurking in the shadows.

Allis sold a "Lister Plow" / Middle Buster for a B. Seems to me I was helping Paul B or Brett P by hauling east one they found in Texas. Used a special tool bar to keep it upright and centered.
It may have been made by Athens plow for Allis. Paul B or Brett would know. |
