    Posted: 20 Oct 2016 at 11:25pm
guy wants to sell me a f2 diesel. i already have a gas F. but thinking i could set the F2 up just for corn and the F beans and wheat. its only a few miles away which is convienient. could also just be a parts machine i guess.    anyway its a little rough been outside a while and looks rusty but seems to be in usable condition. my only worry is the engine, it starts rough. needs ether if its below 60 degrees. once it starts it lets out some white smoke then clears up and sounds good. is this likley from wear, or could it be something simple? think it has around 2000 hours. is this a sign of bad things to come or should i take the gamble?

I'd expect such from a worn engine with low compression. I wouldn't expect such from an engine with 2000 hours.

it has the same engine as the 6060 and 6080 tractor, they always need a little ether to start, don't let that bother you, they are very good engines.

Sounds pretty normal for 14 to 1 compression. That's kindathe way they were.

So did the gleaner engines have the same front crank bearing faluire deal as the tractor engines? Just curious now. And would this engine go in a tractor easily?

Like Mack said.  F2s built in 1978 and after have the exact same engine as used in the 6000 tractors.  1977 F2s still used the 301 diesel without turbo.

Any long walker/long cleaning shoe F-2 (1978 or newer) that somehow has a 6-cylinder 301 in it, NEVER came from the factory like that. It's a transplant for some reason. Just because a 1977 short tail was SOLD in 1978 or 79, doesn't make it a 78 or 79 model.

I checked the serial number at the dealer and that's what they told me.

What about an F with a 301 in it? We have an F hydro with the 301 non turbo in it. Looks like a factory set up to me.

Short walker/shoe F-2's were only ONE YEAR----1977 models. The dealer organization was somewhat upset that the new F-2 really wasn't any more capacity than the 1976 model F. So, for 1978, the increased the HP from 84 flywheel to 95 flywheel and upped the backend capacity. Then, we had something to go out and trade for an older model F machine.

Great motor we have 2 6080's with same motor both went 7500+ hours before rebuild. 14 to 1 should start down to high 30's ours both now have 16 to 1.   I'm very comfortable down to 26-28 with them only using the glow plug. The 14 to 1 is super super easy on fuel. When we had a PTO batch dryer I could get 20-22 hours on a fill up.

The ether is your enemy leave it in the shed.   Use ether on one of my tractors and you will be at the proctologist getting the can removed. The guy we bought our plow off from blew his 7020 up with ether.

if you have one with the 14 to 1 comp. You wont start one with out it when it gets very cold, unless you are where you can plug it in, plus what we get now days is "Starting Fluid " its not near as hot as pure old ether. just need to use a little common scenes when using  starting fluid or ether.

I must be on year 17 or 18 with my older 6080 and year 10 with the newer one. I bet combined they haven't snorted an 1/8 of a can. The older one came as a 14:1.   The older one racked up 7500 hours before I hid some money by overhauling the motor. One is pushing 9000 hours the other 8000 I must be doing something right. Being auger tractors now they start and stop a lot so that doesn't help either.
