I think it depends on which way the pulley on the unit being powered needs to go. Put a twist into the belt if it needs to go the opposite direction of the pulley on the tractor. I THINK!!! sometime correct me if I'm wrong or if theres another reason.

A twist in the belt reverses rotation of the driven pulley and when I hooked my CA up to the belt driven Dyno at our show several years ago I believe it took about 5hp to turn the belt at high idle because of the friction of the 2 sides rubbing together.

Here is a video of that amazing tractor on the PTO dyno at Hutchison. Warning you will not be able to watch this video just once. Notice the guy running around with the heat gun checking exhaust temperatures. If I can remember right it put out over 70 horses.

There was a twist in the belt but you are only seeing about 1/4 of it. It was about 45' long.
