could someone estimate the year on this ? it was purchased new by my grandfather with the adjustable front to cultivate tobacco. dad had to trade it off on a new hay rake in the early eighties. now I am more determined than ever to try and locate it.

It is electric so it's either late 40s or early 50s, I don't guess you have the serial number do you?

It's a 50s model. 5 bolt rear and adjustable front end.

Prolly be hard to find the same one. But to find one identical to it. That would be very doable.

Are there any non-factory things about it that you remember that would set it apart from just another B? Scratches, changed bolts, anything?

It appears from your picture and using the parts book the following information might help in determining the year.

Starter
(bottom location of switch and rod on starter was used till late 1950 -parts book shows B113778)

Taillight
under seat? (taillight was mounted on left fender in late 1950 at B113894).

Footbrakes
(I do not see a handbrake levers) footbrakes started mid 1941 at B52718.

The optional Standard Adjustable front end started in 1940.

So given the above, your tractor could range in years from mid 1941 to late 1950. So given this range in years, unique features about your tractor would help. As others have stated, remembering welds, dents, etc. may be helpful in identifying your tractor.
Good luck in finding your grandpa's tractor!

Well, if your going to have to "see" it to know it, and you need to know where it is, or who bought it, then I would start by advertising for anyone who purchased a B from them, or know of someone who did. That list is going to be long, and full of pot-holes because your going to have to chase a bunch of tractors in order to find the right one.
Another problem with this is how far your going to have to travel in order to chase down some of the leads. Anything that shows up around here in your search, give me a shout and I will go take some pictures of it.
Do you have an email account you want us to send pictures of any B's that fit this description so that you can preview them?
