D272 was the final version of the "B" built in 1957, really only a "B" tractor with a new shell. About 1/2 were TVO other half diesels. The ED40 was a bit heavier and replaced the D272.

The diesel engines used in about 1/2 the D272's was a perkins P3/144 engine, the other 1/2 were the AC's own "TVO" engine, can someone in the know please explain the 'TVO" engine? I have a picture of it, shows it with a strange mag on it, block looks differnet than I have ever seen also

Fester, I'm pretty sure that tractor is set up as a "coon hunter" Normal usage would be to run around in the woods at night hunting racoons, specially in the southern United States. LOL If the angle of the head lights are any indication! They would be perfect to shine up into a tree. I don't know if you have racoons in England, but that is great sport here in The States. Specially bred and trained dogs are unleashed, usually at night, in areas like river and creek bottoms, or swampy areas, to sniff, and track down the "coons". They will run the coons until they are usually treed,(they climb trees to escape), and then they will "sing" out the location(meaning they will bay and bark). Hunters know the "voices" of everyone's particular coonhound ,and to be the first in a tree is to gain kudos. Optimum time for these endeavors is generally in the fall on brisk cool nights, because the scent seems to "hang" longer. Couple all of this with some adult beverages, and or something to warm the blood if it is really cool and you can see why it is such great fun!!!! Generally thought of as a "boy" sport.

Chris TVO is an english form of a kerosene mix, totally unnessessary in Allisses as they will run on straight kerosene anyway unlike fordsons which dont like it at all.
fester we are down near stonehenge (01985248407).
The strange magneto is an english Lucas SR4 as standard and the english block castings are a slightly different mould with a casting number starting with 716 instead of AM.
Chris, the D-270 is a kind of re-shelled B, but the D-272 is in fact quite a bit different due to having a 4 speed transmission and a bigger tranny housing to hold more hydraulic oil for the lift arms, also the torque tube is shorted and thicker useing a steering box which is shorter somewhat like an IB.

Don't see why not, just have to train some dogs to run around and bark or bay at night(after dark no one can see you) get some liquid refreshments and have at it. Bonding is the name of the game!!!

i had an email from an old allis dealer and he says that ac.gb made only 50 d272 but thay were a flop as we brits dont like high crop tractors.he had 6 sent to him to be sold at just about cost price to get rid of them thay sold 45 and broke up the last 5 and turned them into standard d272.if he can find it he will send me a copy of the letter from ac to all the dealers. he has other paper work that might be helpful to allis owners including work shop manuals.now i have found this forum i will post any further info as and when i get it fester

3?
Interesting machine though. Do you know if the gearing is any different to a conventional D272? I'll get a photo or 2 out in the open after it's been re shod and is (hopefully) running

sorry 50 in total 3 i as far as i know the gearing is standard CA 4 speed and REAL interesting to drive on uneven ground, tyre size is 900x36 and 500x15 originally, we had to use 9.5 x 36 rowrop tyres to fit the wheels as the original 900 (10.2 in modern speak) were unobtainable. As for coons hunting the speed the go up the smallest tree is unreal but a .223 and a 12 gauge soon gets em down. And they make good hats !!! (first hand experience) I have one here in the UK (hat not coon unless you count Maine Coon kitties) i see the one in the pics has the headlights set for coons LOL
