I was wondering what the general thought is towards Series I D21s. It sounds like quite a few were converted to a Series II and since fewer Series I were made to begin with, are they more sought after?
At the end of the day, its still a D21 but I was wondering everyone's thoughts about the differences between them, Series I's vs Series II's, turbo converted, barebacks, etc.

Any D21 is good. Unmolested original D21 Series I are becoming a rare commodity. Most were upgraded to Series II specs with the factory kit available at the time. PTO/3pt always adds value in my opinion

There were two stories I heard over the years. One was the D21 had to get a turbo because the newly released 190XT turbo diesels were kicking their butts in the field. The second story was after the disappointment of the 77 HP One-Ninety and Deere had the 95 HP 4020 already, the D21 chassis was to get the turbo 301 to compete against the 4020. That didn't happen, and the saga of the XT drivelines failing plagued the company for years.

the D21 had a 426 cubic inch engine. The series 2 turbo charge in 1969 had 138 horsepower.

What was the 426 engine originally designed and built for?
Was it used in construction/industrial before it was put in the D21?

The 426 engine was first used in the D21. Later it was used in industrial equipment as well. There was even an "One Highway" version for medium duty trucks. Have one of those in my 220.

Designed to be used in several things when on the drawing board, but the D-21 farm tractor was the biggest user of the new 3000 series engine in the beginning. From 1963 to 1985, the 426 engine was used in tractors, combines, gen sets, irrigation pumps, construction equipment, medium duty trucks, etc, etc. I saw a D-21 about 35 yrs ago that had chassis s/n 1004 and the engine s/n was 3400-1006 or 1007. The T-16 4-wheel drive tractor was retrofitted with the turbocharged 426 (3500 gen 1), but this would have been in 1966.
