I'm the new owner of a D19D and need some help getting it started in cold temps. I've looked up the factory heater on the AGCO parts book website and it shows what appears to be a type of tank heater. Is it possible to add a freeze plug heater somewhere? I've also used the lower radiator hose heaters in the past with good results but am unsure how well it would mount on the lower hose with it being the ribbed type.
What is everybody else using to start their 19 diesels in the winter? |

The ribbed hose is not a ome hose. It should work good in the OEM hose. A tank type heater works good also. MACK

Mack,
I put on a tank heater routing a hose from the block fitting behind the starter (fitting you put in here may have to have a corner ground off to clear the starter) and then up to the water heater. Wish I had close up pictures but tractor is 120 miles south of me right now.
I mounted the heater off a mount hole in the alternator I put on.
Good Luck,
Terry

Ok, I just bought the correct lower radiator hose off e-bay. Does anybody know what size hose it is so I can order a heater? The add where I bought the hose list 1.562" on one end and 1.812" on the other. What I need to know is the size in the middle (where I will add the heater). I guess I could wait until I get the hose but want to go ahead and order it.
I also noticed that all the hose heaters warn you not to use the heater unless the engine has a thermostat bypass. I assume that's what the metal line coming off the water pump is. The tank heaters I've seen take up a bunch of room. The hose heater seems more compact so that's why I'm going with it. The tank heaters seem like they heat up faster though. |

My D17D had a non working tank type heater on it when I got it. The way someone did it is in the water manifold on top near the back there is a plug they removed and put a hose barb in there. On the block, they took out the petcock and put the other hose barb there. I've been running 10-30 diesel oil and two 1000cca batteries with a 02 cable from each to the starter and it starts pretty good. Before the rebuild that combo and just a very slight whiff of ether through the intake plug would make it start right up. The coldest I have had it start like that was -10. Now that it's been overhauled, it has only one 00 cable to the starter. It still cranks good, so we'll see how good it does this winter.
