What is the difference between a D19 and a D17 Diesel cam? Someone mentioned that a gas cam would work or more power? In a diesel. In need of a cam for my D19 Diesel. Looking for some options.

Is that the diesel cam? Someone mentioned running a gas cam in the diesel. Dose anyone have any specs on the different cams? Just wondering how different the gas is from the diesel.

lift on valves are the same gas vs diesel
gas intake opens 27 deg BTDC closed 57 deg ABDC
diesel intk   opens 10deg  BTDC  close 38 deg ABDC eff sn D 01499
 "       "          "     30 deg   "         "      40  "     "     prior to D-01499  these were mostly
                                                                           changed out
gas exh  opens  59 deg BBDC  closes  25 deg ATDC
diesel "     "       40   "    "          "       15 "       "      Effective SN
  "      "     "        50 deg  "         "       70 "      "       Prior  sn

the theory was with turbo the  more valve opening the more HP - and it did - but it took a can of ether or gas or TNT to crank one north of the mason/Dixon line in the winter.
ME thinks the gas cam might just give more hp... but at the expense of ez starts. We have had D19's on the dyno's through the years and can get 80 hp by advancing the timing on the pump - but they will not start. When timed to start they will pull 65-70 hp with the late cam.  We never dyno'd an early cam that we know of.

Thanks for the information. That answered my questions. I need to find me a diesel cam then. Iowa gets pretty chilly now and then.
