 Topic: D17 Snap Coupler Pin Removal

Have a 1963 D17 Series III and two of the steel pins that hold the snap coupler springs in place have broken off flush with the casting. Have tried a regular drill bit and left-twist extractor tool and cannot drill out or remove. With all of the AC snap couplers out there just looking for any tried/true methods to remove these pins or should I just take the snap coupler off the tractor and take it to a machine shop to heat and drill out? FYI, the snap coupler is the bell underneath the tractor. You are talking about the lift latches here. I know overhaul kits are available, but I have not had to do one yet. When in doubt, a machine shop will always do what you request.

Ig you're talkin about the forward pin, that holds the spring, just drill with the appropriate sized bit, thread, and put in a stove bolt. If you wanna get fancy, fill the screw slot with bondo, and paint...

Tracy commented about this on an old thread.
It will have drive screws in the rear ears for the springs. They have
a high helix thread that is driven in. The drive screw is hardened, it
will break off if not careful. It can be gotten out if patience is used.
You can anneal it with a torch, if you break it. Don't try to drill it
out without proper tools or setup. You will ruin your ears. . Look at
the threads and see which direction will turn it out. It won't come out
easy. The front is riveted in. It is self explanitory if you examine it.

Gary, Yes I now understand your problem with the latches. I wounder if any one ever tried melting out the old pin with a oxy/acct torch? This would be a last resort and I have never tried it and its a dedicated part. Might ruin it? But my dad told me that a broken steel bolt could be melted out of a cast part and not damage the casting. I actually did this on some 5/8 broken bolts in a off color TD6 dozer undercarriage. It did work. Wasnt pretty and not for the weak of heart. Regards, Chris

If you heat it up near red, with a torch and gradually lesson the heat, letting it cool slow, it will soften to where you can drill it out. I don't think you could blow it out with a torch like you can with a thru bolt. Just no place to blow it.

Thanks for all of the input and I took the latch to a local machine shop today for him to heat and try to remove the steel pin, hopefully not damaging the latch cast material. Thanks again for the input, it convinced me that I needed some outside help!! Gary

Thanks for asking and I took my D17 Series III lift latch to a local machine shop in Richmond, VA and he welded onto the broken hardened steel pin that holds the spring and after heating was able to twist/pull the old pin out. I got the latch back on the D17 and placed a new pin and connected a new spring and got it working correctly again. Thanks for asking and certainly wished I had learned the skill of welding as it would have come in real handy on many occasions on our hay farm over the years! Gary
