    Posted: 29 Jun 2017 at 1:34pm
Good afternoon,  Yesterday while I was shifting my 1965 Allis Chalmers Series IV D17 from reverse to first, I felt a small pop.  The shifter will rotate freely and it is stuck in reverse.... I limped it into the garage and removed the Shift Cover Assembly.  The shifter is not attached to anything... I assume the linkage is in the bottom of the transmission (which is still full of 80/90... I am planning on draining it tonight after work and hope to see what kind of contraption that broke... At this point I have no clue how It attaches to the the shifting forks... Google and youtube.. my usual go-to's are no help.  Is there anyone that has had or may know what broke?  And may have a part or part number?  Thank You

Pretty sure it just rides in a rail on top of the forks.  No linkage at all.  When the ball on the bottom of the shift lever gets worn it can and does pop out of gear.  Big screwdriver will pop the reverse rail back into neutral then just drop the shifter back in.

The entire shifting mechanism is attached to the top cover, forks and all. It isn't hard to remove and reinstall. The lever will not come out without the cover off due to a deflector on the shift lever. I would definitely drain the trans through a screen and search for the ball if you find it broke off the lever and not just extremely worn.

Many years ago dad broke a shift rail, acted just like yours, AC mechanic pulled the top cover, had him going in less 2 hours.

With cover still on tractor, remove rubber boot, remove snap ring, rounded washer, and then lift straight up on gear shift. Line the three slots with a big screw driver. Drop shifter back in, put washer in, then snap ring.      MACK
