I was wondering if a d17 series 4 can handle a 3-point mounted 6 row cultivator or is that just going to be too heavy? I think the guy I work with said the cultivator was made in the 60s

There was an accessory lift kit available for the D17, it added an extra lift cylinder to each lift arm. You may need that along with all the weight you can pile out front.
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

Series 4 model has no need for such a kit as they already have two 2.50 inch diameter cylinders.

I used a D-17IV diesel with four factory front weights for years pulling a 6 row cultivator in dark red kidney beans. I swapped to 14.9 x 38" rears to get more room for the second pass when the rows were getting closed in.  Great combination with no problems. You do need some front weights .
Nothing is impossible if it is properly financed

my uncle had a 6 row narrow cult on his D17, i don't remember if there were front weights on it or not. the tractor handled it just fine, on both flat and hill ground. (clay soil)

You will need front weights--you sure don't want to be using the brakes to steer through your crops.

Keep the front firmly on the ground

I used to use an Allis 8 row 30" folding cultivator on my series IV D17. I mounted a wheel weight on the front. Used it at least 3 years and it worked great.

I took the snap hitch from an old 4 row Allis and put it on on a JD RG630 and use it behind a WD45. Have 2 F&H wheel weights mounted on the front. Front is a little light.

I have an IH 4 row cultivator I put on mine, lifts it fine, the front does get light so I would think you will definitely need weights but with those added it shouldn’t be a problem.
