What should a D17 series 2 have for a muffler? I've seen the skirted style like a WD, and a round clamp style like the cheap farm store replacements. I really need a new one but am not sure which one is correct. By the parts book with a serial number of 33xxx it should be a 70234494. I don't see a diagram for how that muffler attaches to the manifold/tractor.

The series II uses the cylindrical muffler with a skirt at the bottom with 2 holes in it. AGCO carries them - they are the real Nelson muffler too (for a price).

That would be the same as the series 1, but the parts book shows a split at 32,000 and a different muffler but no picture of it.

Series 2 gas mufflers are round yes, but are LARGER in diameter and have a larger hole in the hood. The mounting method is different too, as I think they had gone to the threaded pipe in the manifold with the larger muffler using a muffler clamp. They were trying to reduce the noise levels of the original Nelson muffler with this change.

I think the only different muffler was the oval mufflers that they switched to for the Series III and IV models.

Hmm. Not sure my manifold has threads on the inside. What size pipe did they use and what threads would it be?

Series 4 would be the oval one. I think the inlet and outlet were offset.

Series 3 and 4 are oval mufflers, again for a quieter running tractor.

If you find a source for the right one let me know. I'm looking for a good one for my series 2 D-17.

Correct series 2 gas muffler is 4 inches to 4 1/2 inches in diameter. Old Nelsons were about 3 inches diameter.

The larger diameter straight-through muffler for the D17 Series II (70234494) is still available through Nelson. The Nelson part number is 06923T. Check out seller "nelsonglobalproducts" on eBay. I bought one a few months ago just to have one in stock.

Brian, does that current Nelson muffler have the same Nelson sound everyone is after? I see OK Tractors sells the correct series 2 muffler (or at least dimensionally accurate) and also has some kind of pipe adapter. Looks like it just slides into the manifold as opposed the threading in.

Aaron, I have not installed the muffler, so I cannot testify as to the sound. It does have the perforated interior as with other Nelson units. The input is slotted, with an ID of approximately 1.9 inches and a body diameter of just under 4.5 inches. |

If it is a Nelson muffler, it would still have that Nelson sound. They were OEM for these tractors. |
