Just traded for this tractor and it runs like a champ with none of trans issues common to these tractors . It does however have gear noise coming from the final drives on both sides . The sound goes away when on a downhill grade . Was wondering if changing the lube and going to a heavier gear oil ( ie 85/140 ) might quiet it down some . I really don’t want to go to the trouble of swapping sides with the gearing . Any advice is appreciated .

You think it is final drives, but in all honesty it is probably the ring and pinion under the seat. You can change the oil to whatever you want, but I doubt heavier oil will do anything for noise. This assumes of course, that everything has oil in it now.

The final drives in my D-17 are a bit noisy. I attribute that to it's being used most of it's life by the P.O. pulling a 3 bottom plow on a large farm down in the valley.
I replaced the dirty old gear oil (they were not low) with Mobil 1 synthetic with no discernible change. It is most noticeable on the road in 4th gear.

I respect Dr Allis' opinion but I swear that the sound is more pronounced out toward the wheels . Anyway I think I will drain and change to heavier oil in the final drives .

It's a little bit of work , go ahead and  remove both fenders and take it for a ride . I have been down this path with several D 17's over the years. It is amazing how the fenders will resonate noise. I believe you will then get a handle on where  the noise is. While the fenders are off it will give you a chance to do a little rust preventative work.

Most of these final drives are seldom serviced. So changing the oil is good. I think I put 80-90 in my WD45 but 80-140 would work as well. Won't change the sound tho unless it is dry now. Great to clean up both those pans and install new gaskets.

Could you switch sides/rotate the final drives, which would reverse the gears, use other side of the gears?

that's what I did to my 45. The load side was flaked on the pinions. Replacing the flaking brgs and reversing them quieted them a lot.
