I have a 1960 A-C D17, S/N 32212 Series 2.
The rear Axle Seals have a leak and I would like to replace them. I followed the Maintenace instructions, and removed the Axle Bolt/Washer, and I removed the Axle Snap Ring, But I cannot remove the Axle. What Do I do Now? Ed

I don't recall a problem when I removed an axle from my WD a few years ago.
Basically the same set up.
As I recall, after removing the bolt, washer, shims and snap ring, I gave the end of the axle a "rap" using a piece of hardwood and a large hammer to get it "started".
I also put some blocks under the bull gear so it would not drop on the floor.
I guess a "gentler" way would be to place a small bottle jack on the end of the shaft and push it out.
BTW, the reason mine leaked is because the area on the axle where the seal rides
was quite badly pitted.

Seems like when I did mine, the outer bearing is big enough and was tight enough that it pulled the seal out with the hub.

I think that happened with me too.
I think both the inner and outer bearing cones fit pretty shugly on the axle.

On the Series IV axles the outside hub is drilled and tapped for 7/8 fine thread. Maybe to attach a slide hammer? I think mine came apart pretty hard, too, and the outer bearing, race and seal came along with the shaft.

Slide hammer idea sounds good!
Should be easy to run a plate and catch a coupla lug bolt holes and go
from there!

Screw a old used bolt in the hole in axel. Get the sledge hammer and drive the axel out. MACK

Hi Guys, I have tried the Bottle jack, the hammer idea, and the Slide Hammer Idea----It is solid, and won't budge not even a litle bit.----It Took 3 hours just to get that stupid Snap ring back into place again----I had to use a bent coat hanger to grab the snap ring while I held a small Mag Lite in my teeth--HA!Ed

I just got through with one and had to use a 20#sledge to get it moving. It ruined the bolt but It did come out.
