I have been on here about this before and have tried all the different fluids and made sure it was not over filled. No matter what oil or oil additives I use in my PS on my series II D17 it foams out the breather on the filter. Again I started with what the book called for in oil and tried all the others. I fill it to just at the top of the gear in the bolster and it will foam until it is so low it will not work properly. So, is the cylinder bad as one person suggested or other problems? Can it be rebuilt or should I try a used replacement? One is on ebay for $450 (used and seems high). I'm ready to try anything. Thanks Jim

Just a thought, I think you are still low on oil. If I remember right the books says 1 inch above the gear for the oil level. I would continue to add oil to it and see if it gets better?

If you can see the oil and it is not foaming or discolored, that is all you can do ....
foaming can mean too low or too high....Mark

Just recently I had the same thing happen on one of my D-17's (a s-1 diesel with the PS pump driven off the generator). It happened out after going for years with no issues, check out my thread from yesterday for more details. I believe, and others seem to agree, that it has to be a leak on the suction side of the system, between the reservoir and the pump. If I were you, the first thing I would inspect is this area for obvious loose fittings or worn lines.
I have things all apart at the moment and will get it fixed one way or another and report what I find...in the meantime all tips are appreciated!

It is sucking air from some where. Seals in pump, suction hose, suction pipe in front support. The most likely place is pump. MACK

I've had it at all levels and after reading these and some suggestions from Carl I'll start looking for loose fittings ! I'll see what we come up with and let you know. I don't use it much but I really hate oil leaks of any kind. Thanks, Jim

From what I understand, the suction line can be raised and lowered in the sump, sometimes the suction line can loosen and pull up out too far.
