dropped the eng oil on my sisters D-17 stuck my finger in drain hole and there is a loose piece of steel laying in the bottom of pan, is it supposed to be a baffle of some sort? that has come loose?

The oil pump pickup is there. It has a flat steel shield covering most of the mesh screen and it is on the very bottom. The pickup assembly is not solidly mounted and can move up and down slightly. Hopefully this is what you are feeling with your finger in the drain hole. Otherwise, yank the pan off and find out what came loose… depending on year of tractor and steering setup, can be a big job just pulling the pan.

Nothing should be loose on the bottom of the pan. Get a bore scope and see whats in there.

Legit D-17 engines had a floating oil pump pickup screen. It moves up and down 2 inches.
