Depends how close it is to the tractor, how much pressure your hydraulic pump is making and how many front end weights you have.  A series 4 has more lifting power than a series 3.  A series 3 has more lifting power than an older D-17 model. A bale spear 6 inches farther away than it should/could be makes a BIG difference on what can be picked up. I will guarantee a homemade snap-coupler bale spear that almost rubs the hay bale against the PTO shaft will pick up far more than any manufactured bale spear connected to an add-on 3-point hitch !!!

I have one of those HD semi plow hitches that would be a good starting point for a homemade bale snap coupler bale spear.  Where in Ohio are you located? I'll be heading north of Columbus sometime soon.

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

I had a customer (40 yrs ago) doing 1500 lb+ bales on an old D-17 diesel. I had his pump cranked up to 4,000 psi and he made a close coupled snap-coupler spear.
