did you decide if the battery is connected POSITIVE ground, or has it been changed to NEGATIVE ?

The negative side of the battery is attached to the ground. Why would this be the case when an old-style generator is in place?

Generator does not care. it will charge either POS or NEG ground. All you have to do is reflash the VR.
99.9% of all alternators built are set up for NEG ground only out of the box. They can be made to charge POS ground, but not without changing parts on the inside I once knew a guy that had a 2CYL JD that had a 10SI on it that was set up to charge 6volt POS ground.

I am starting a youtube channel and my first video is on none other than this subject. I will post a link when it is done. I have to shoot the final clip and finish the editing process

Genny was probably rewired as negative ground to make it 'foolproof' for jump starting ??

No rewiring required to make a GEN charge neg ground that was set up originally set up as positive ground. Switch battery cables and take a jumper wire and jump BAT to GEN on the VR for a brief second(assuming it is an A circuit). Keep in mind the Ammeter will read backwards unless you swap the wires on that and on a gasoline tractor you have to switch the coil wires as well. Starters and Generators do not care about POS or NEG ground. The only one that cares is an alternator and they can be made to charge either, however there are parts inside that have to be changed, its not something easily done Now that I reread your post, you probably meant the battery was rewired for NEG ground to make jump starting easier. Its early yet LOL........

yes, that happens a lot.. Someone puts in a new battery and think, "yes, all vehicles are negative ground" and just hooks it up that way.. Some do it on purpose so it will be the same as the truck and other equip for easier jumping / service.
as mentioned, if you switch ON PURPOSE and know what your doing, then the current is running BACKWARD.. so you need to swap wires on the ammeter , the coil, and flash the regulator......... the starter and generator and lights really dont care.

All D17s left the factory with a generator wired with a positive ground. Get the generator rebuilt and it will be good for another 60 years.
