I have a D17 gas that only gets used for parades and the like. I had it warming up and it started running poorly so I gave it some more gas and it died and it won't start. I removed each spark plug, grounded them one by one and cranked the started all of the plugs fired. Must be gas problem. I drained the tank, cleaned it and the fuel line and Sediment bulb and found nothing. Still won't start I took the carb apart and found nothing so I took it to the dealer who put a kit in the carb and it still won't start. Sometimes it will pop and fire like it is trying to start. Any help is appreciated

Try a different condenser. Most points and condenser come from the land of almost right and quality is just about non existent.

Have you checked to make sure the distributor shaft is turning?

No points or condenser replaced with electronic and I have spark at the plugs. Doesn't spark at the plugs mean it is working electrically?

Is it a nice blue spark? At least 3/8 inch long? Have you changed the plugs lately? Is the inside of the distributor cap all nice and shiny and clean and dry? A plug fires differently under compression than in open air.

if you have a timing light, set up with it on the coil wire, crank the engine and see if you have uniform spark.

I'm going to recheck the amount of spark, may not be enough. Plugs are new, I'll recheck the cap and rotar and make sure distributor shaft is turning. Thank guys you gave a rookie some great new ideas

Had basically the same problem with my D15. Took out the electronic ignition and went back with a good set of points and condensor, kept the Flamethrower coil in there and it has been running great since.

You are right, but is it turning all the time. I have heard of the gear turning on the distributor shaft, throwing it way off on the timing.

Is it getting gas from the carb to the motor? Is the float stuck in one position in the carb? I'd get rid of the electronic ignition. I had one on my D14 and it ran like poo. Changed it back to the points and condenser and it runs great. Another thing that I had wrong on mine was the distributor had "slipped" out of timing. Might just check to see if those bolts are German...you know...goodntight :-) Best of luck!

One more thing. Twist the distributor and ensure that it is tight. If not, retime the motor and tighten the bolt.

Gee had same problem... mine would not run unless on choke.
My solution....went back a few days later, tried again and it ran fine.. My D17 drives me nuts sometimes...

Thanks guys, I'm going to do some more checking. It does seem to be something like the gear slipping on the distributor shaft or a little pin broken somewhere. I'm thinking that way because one minute it was running great and the next it won't run at all.
