D17 Series IV (according to serial)

See two images.

I was shutting off the gas (upon shutting down for the day) before many of you were born.  Dad wanted it so.  We boys simply complied.

I can tell that my valve does not do the trick because there is a leak downstream.

Could I fix this by opening it up?  Or, is it reasonable to think that a new part would fit?

Should I strive for something that is a little more burnt orange?

rebuild the carburetor and you wont have to shut off at the sediment bowl... If the bowl or valve leaks, that can be fixed with a gasket and string / floss / or packing on the valve. Really no need to replace the unit unless it has a major damage.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

If there is a leek down stream, you are only loosing the fuel that is in line. Not a shut off problem.                      MACM

The shutoff you have is probably better quality than anything you can buy today (imported). As Steve said, remove the packing nut and put some dental floss or something similar (I have used rolled up thread tape) and re-snug the packing nut.

Standard practice for us is to shut of the fuel on our gas AC’s. Rebuilt plenty of carbs that after time begin to flood or leak if the fuel is left on. Work fine in operation but do tend to flood after a week or so. Just a habit to turn off, problem solved and no big deal or mess. My WD carb has been rebuilt and sure enough, 2 weeks after the rebuild it started to flood if the fuel bowl was left on. Runs great, just went back to turning it off after I’m done with it for the day.
