The finals on my D17 are kind of noisy, mostly the left side. I put new bearings and seals in it when I fixed the brake. What I found was the axle hub shaft retainer bolt was loose, probably for a long time. New bearings didn't make it any quieter, and if anything it's louder when under torque going forward. Coasting down hill they're quiet. My guess is there is a wear pattern on the bull gear that was caused by that loose bolt and now I disturbed it by fixing the loose bearings.
Since most of the wear comes from going forward, anybody flip the finals around and find it made a noticeable reduction in gear noise?

I flipped finals on my 45 way back when.Dad said it was common practice back in the day when he worked on them. Drive side was flaking a few teeth on the pinion shafts.Mine weren't noisy before or after.

Can you do that on the bull gear? The hub on the gear where the shaft goes through has a long side and shirt side(with spacer on short side) ???

I was thinking just swap the whole assembly. I'm pretty sure the bull gear can only go one way in there. Swapping side to side would reverse everything.

Dealer would sometimes swap them from side to side on 190xt to gain new wear surface.

It always sounded like the final drives were noisey on my 170 (especially in road gear). When I parted it out this spring I saw that the real problem was in the ring and pinion. It had set for 18 years in an orchard and evidently there was water in the rear end...one nice big rusty/pitted area on the ring gear.

I had a water condensation problem in the power director big time. When I replaced the shaft seals and I had the carrier bearing cover off, the trans looked very clean inside. Didn't see any rust issues on the ring or any other gears I could see. Did have a couple minor pits in the carrier bearing cup though.
