Recently got a D17 diesel. Was told it was a hard start, but the starter must have a bad spot in the armature since the solenoid will engage but not rotate the starter (just let the smoke out of the starter instead). Was able to get it to spin over a couple times before. And even a few after this first occurred.
Looking to rebuild it. I know there are different starters for different years, just need to know how to tell them apart as the ID plate is painted over, and nearly finished to boot. Cant say if it is or is not original as I got another starter with it (bad solenoid)
Thanks

I would see if you can swap the solenoid to the other starter. Then you should get going and have a chance to check out your new tractor before you spend money rebuilding the starter.

Most likely the stator windings are burned up.
The difference in the starters is one has a solenoid attached to the starter and the other uses a separate solenoid/
