I bought an allis d-17. theres a large plate towards the bottom of the dash. is that for the speedometer/pto or for an hour meter also the guage on the far right is a mess. what is it for. oil pressure and temp gauges works. amp does not. its been converted to a 12 volt alternator. thanks I am new to the d-17 tractors. norm series one.

I have a D-17 like yours.  The large "plate" is where the tachometer would go.  So, yes that gauge included information like PTO, engine hours and travel speed.   It was optional equipment so if the purchaser didn't opt in for that, the "plate" was installed.  The gauge on the far right you refer to is the traction booster gauge.  An A-C patent.  You can get the gauges "refaced" or you can purchase new working or non-working gauge if it's a "mess".  Hope that helps.
 
It would be interesting to know which series of D-17 you have as there were 4 different ones.  Forum responses are more accurate when we know the series of which D-17 you have.  Post a pic and most of us can also answer that question if you don't know that info.  Thanks.

mine is a 1958 1st series. proof meter and cable is what I think I might need but where would the proof meter hook up at. I have n Allis h4 crawler and it hooks up in back of generator but this tractor has been converted to an alternator. love the power steering. my old arm strong power steering is getting weeker by the day. thanks

what pressure should the traction pressure guage read. im not got to restore the tractor as I plan on using here on my 30 acres. really don't want to pay 100 bucks or a guage.

That might be a difficult answer for many... it's only indicating anything when the draft control feature is in use with a ground-engaged implement (plow, etc).

As for the tachometer drive, it is located on the rear end of the distributor drive horizontal shaft.  If yours was not equipped with one at the factory, keep that plate, as it'd be most valuable in a restoration... as-built-from-factory.  There's probably not many that were ordered without a tach...
Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.

On my series 2 the cable attaches to the distributor.  I would assume a series 1 is the same.  Got my tach and cable from DJS Parts.  34 hours in a year and it's still working great.

thanks for the info. always like allis stuff. always wanted a d-17 and these price drops sure helps. its got combine tire and rim but he gave me the original spin out rims but one needs some welding done on it from I guess a calcium leak at some time. he did say there was no calcium in them now. my tire guy wont work on any tire that has calcium in it. the ta works but when you pull it back it wont stay there, dosent look like the pin locks in right. I sure do like the power steering though.

 If you want a working gauge for the traction booster, you can by a 5,000 psi oil filled gauge for under $20 that will fit the hole. It won't have the Allis name on it, but will do the same job. It really doesn't do much but indicate when your draft control is working, and anyone that gets familiar with the system can use it fine without a gauge.

I pulled the large nut off the distributor. saw the drive for the proofmeter. my question is since the hole is so large how does the proofmeter cable attach. does it screw on the slotted drive and the hole is just left open. thanks norm

The D-19 I had had a square shaft in flexible steel tube. You pushed the square part into the distrubutor's square slot, then tighten a fitting on the steel sleeve to draw it tight. Got it at Steiner, listed as a tach cable for a IH 1066 but in description said it fit my tractor

You need the drive insert, I have a couple if I wasn't too old and senile to remember where I stored them.SmileSmileSmile

Have a series 1 D 15 that evidently didn't leave the factory with a tach/hour meter . Has a 1" plug in the back of the governor . May put a electric hour meter on it one day . Thanks

mine has a 1 1/2 inch nut on it. I took it off and saw where it may go but cant see how you fasten the cable on it. thanks
