Having starting issues with my 65 D15. It will bump start in 4th gear on a hill and run awesome but does not want fire using the starter. It has new points and condenser the points are polished and gapped at 22 thousands. Newer rebuild on the carburetor and fresh fuel. Spark check on the plugs reveal it’s getting spark. Any ideas on what to look for would be appreciated thanks

1) bad ignition switch not feeding power to starter solenoid when in 'start' position
2) bad starter solenoid
3) bad (open) wire from solaenoid to starter
4) bad starter

PUT TRACTOR IN NEUTRAL...
a) jumper big lugs of solenoid, does starter spin ? if so NOT starter.
b) put meter on little lug of solenoid, turn key to start, does meter show 12V? if so NOT ign switch...
c) that leaves bad solenoid...

this should 'get you going'....

Thanks for the reply

Starter cranks over good probly should have specified that to begin with.
Thinking it’s a fuel delivery issue..
I can crank on it for a couple cycles, pull a plug and it’s dry.

Could possibly be in the valve train too I guess but I’m not convinced that’s the problem

Did it do this BEFORE you worked on the carb ???  Sounds to me like the choke flapper is missing or it isn't 100% choked when cranking. Choke cable maybe not adjusted right ??

Before I rebuilt the carb it had the same starting issue, but it would puke fuel cause the floats were sticky and out of adjustment.. Stuck carb on and jump started it, ran awesome under load and at an idle had to make minimul adjustments.

Choke is all hooked up and tight..

OK.. simple test..
Pull ALL plugs out, keep connected to wires, lay on valve cover, turn key and look for spark...
If NO spark, ign switch is bad. You need spark in both run and start positions.
Bump start means key is in 'run' position. Since it'll run then, coil/plugs, etc are ok...
shouldn't be a 'gas' problem.

But, is the flapper valve in the choke plate??  And the choke plate has to be centered when it is closed, and the cable has to be adjusted correctly so the choke plate is 100% fully closed. If the cable outside isn't placed correctly in it's holding clamp the choke cannot close fully.

Try a hot jumper wire from the battery to the coil, then try to start it.

I've seen when coil was weak that they would bump start immediately but were real hard to start with the starter. Put on new coil and all was well.

WE have had issues like this where the starter 'steals fire' from the coil. The D17 has a special solenoid. We usually don't fight the issue but install a relay that keeps the power to the coil during starting using the ign and start wire to the trigger wire on the relay which now connects battery to coil... if you find the plugs are not firing during starter operation .
When told "it's not the money,it's the principle", remember, it's always the money..

Is the starter turning the engine over good?  You did not make any mention of that.

Had to run out of town on work but I’m gonna test the coil when I get back to it and go from there.

Stick a hot battery in it and the starter turns the engine over good yes..
