I want to buy a D15 and it has no serial number. I want to know of it's a series 1 or 2. Is there anything that could tell me other than the muffler, air filter and fenders? Thanks for the help.

Headlights are on the fenders of Series II (fenders are the same, but higher up on IIs). Air cleaner stack is on the RIGHT side of the Series II (series I are on the left). Aside from these details, they are pretty much the same.
Where are you looking for the serial number? Left side of torque tube immediately behind the engine? Might be too pitted there? |

I was looking on the left side on the sheet metal part. As far as the fenders, are they just moved up on the bracket?

Serial number is NOT on sheet metal. It is stamped into the casting. The series II fender brackets are taller, not the fenders.

AdamK, The serial number will be located on the Clutch housing on the left side (facing front). We used to place paper over the number and trace the impression with a pencil.
The serial numbers of the D-15 Series I - 1001 - 8169 (made from 1960 - 1962) The serial numbers for D-15 Series II - 13001 - 25410 (made from 1963 - 1968) Information from MR SWINFORD'S book Allis Chalmers Farm Equipment 1914 - 1985 Good Luck! Bill Long |

Okay it looks like they are the series 2 mounts. The guy did tell me it has bigger tires in it so maybe that's why it looks different. One fender doesn't have holes for the lights.

Also, on the series 2, the PD handle has a thumb guard on the top front edge...

All D-15's had "full-flow" engine oiling system. Series 1 had oil bath air cleaner (left side stack) and series 2's had a DRY paper air filter (right side stack).

Dr. "All D-15's had "full-flow" engine oiling system. Series 1 had oil bath air cleaner (left side stack) and series 2's had a DRY paper air filter (right side stack)." Don't you mean all D-15 'Series II' have Full Flow Oil Filter. Gary |

One of the differences between a D-14 and D-15 engine was the full-flow oiling system. They are both G-149 engines, but the D-15 ALWAYS has been full-flow oiling be it a G-149 or a G-160.

BE, CE and W engines have a bypass lube system. Basically what oil doesn't go thru the filter, goes thru the engine. You only filter part of the oil each time it goes thru the pump. Full flow is just that. All oil is filtered and then pumped to the engines moving parts. That's the best I can describe it. ![]() |

I would guess the latest D-14 models already had the thumb guard and ALL D-15's.
