    Posted: 09 Nov 2015 at 6:58pm
I am still working on a D-15 series II, and my donor tractor has what appears to be a heavy duty front axle with a 3/8 x 4" plate welded in a vertical position along the bottom of the axle tube from end to end.  I want to use this axle as there will be a loader on this tractor.  The pivot pin is worn and needs to be replaced.  Agco wants $226 for an 1-1/4" diameter x 4-1/2" long pin.  What is so special about it?  I have never seen the part before it is welded to the axle.  Is it milled flat where it welds to the axle? Or is it a special alloy? Would an 1-1/4" grade 8 bolt work?  Any thoughts?  Thanks for your help.

Either use a piece of Thomsom shafting or a piece of case hardened Hyd. cylinder shafting. Both will be hardened about .030 to .060 deep. Great for wear and has the wanted toughness. HTH Tracy

Do what I do with all of my axle pivots. Take it to the local fabrication shop.  They remove the old one and weld on a new one that is perfectly centered (for a lot cheaper than AGCO).

Dana I've been thinking about this as well.  My pivot pin is worn down to 1.2" DIA measured top to bottom (1.25 on the sides).  I was thinking of getting a stick of 4130.  Mcmaster sells them for $25 for a foot.  It's low carbon so should weld easy and comes with a HRC 20 hardness.  I'd like to cut the original pin off and get the hardness on it though.

I had mine done and was no big deal.  That has to be a very common size pin of some sorts.  My wife's nephew just took a look at and said I will make you one.

It is not flat where it mounts to the axle.

looking at your old pin I see you had the same ailment as mine.  That thing did not stick in all the way past the bushing.  So measure up how long you want the new on to be and not go by the old length.  My bud prides himself with his torch skills.  He cut the old one off so clean that you could see the guide for the reinstall marked on the axle.  i can't remember if it was a groove or what.
