I purchased a starter solenoid that was to replace the original solenoid on a D15 diesel tractor. The terminals are not positioned the same as the one removed. When the new one is installed, there are two metal control rods that interfere with the terminals when it is positioned as the old one. I think I can make it work if the solenoid is turned 180 degrees. My question is, and this may sound a little dumb, does it matter to the large terminals which one is 12 volt incoming and outgoing? No markings on the solenoid.
Thanks.

I does not matter, power can follow in either direction.

Not all solenoids have the same circuitry, even if they look the same. It may (and likely will) work, however for some solenoids it does matter which post the battery wire hooks to. It depends on the internal wiring of the solenoid. Some insulated base solenoids have an internal circuit between the large post the battery wire is supposed to hook to and the pull in winding of the solenoid. On those the solenoid pull in coil is engaged by grounding the small terminal of the solenoid since that internal circuit keeps power to the pull in coil all the time. Not knowing what replacement solenoid, you purchased makes it hard to be sure the right answer is given. JMHO

I purchased this solenoid from DJS Tractor Parts as a direct replacement for the solenoid on a D15 diesel series 1. It appears to be a standard old Ford 3 pole solenoid. The numbers on the solenoid are 392!A20 and 733 102. Thought I would send a picture, but not smart enough to figure out how to insert it into this message.

If there is continuity between the base and the small terminal it should be ok to turn around and use the big terminals for either power of load as you want.
If there is continuity between either of the big posts and the small post, that big post needs to have the power cable. In this case the small terminal has to be grounded to pull the solenoid in, and would be wrong for your D15. |
