I replaced the non functional mechanical thermostat with a new Bosch mechanical thermostat. Thermostat shows the tractor operating at 150-160 pretty consistently now. I know the manual says it should operate between 170 and 220. I'm assuming there must be a 160 degree thermostat installed, but I have not opened it up yet. Is 160 degree thermostat typical on these? Should I swap out to a 180 degree?

What you do NOT want to do is replace it with a 180, only to find out the '180' is STILL on the bench, next to the phone you just HAD to answer......

Alright. If it's not a big deal I'll leave it, but thr manual states that it must be at least 170 to avoid condensation build up. What would be the harm in changing to a 180?

Nothing. You don't realize how many THOUSANDS of D-17 gas tractors had 160 degree stats in them.

How do you know it's 160 degrees?  Gage?  Maybe a 60 year old gauge is weak and not reading correct?  If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.

I don't know for a fact it's 160 degree thermostat but I just installed a brand new Bosch temp gauge. My initial thought was that maybe whatever thermostat was in there was stuck open.

If the tractor does not get used much or gets used for light duty work, it's good to put a 180 degree Tstat in it so it runs a but warmer.  That is what I put in mine.

My suggestion would be to use an IR thermometer on the block, while the motor is hot.  The 149 ci block also had 2 different sensor locations, one up front, at the  t-stat, and one near the manifold, that was very close to the exhaust manifold heat bleed. temps at the 2 locations could vary 20-30 degrees...Wink

I put a 180 along with a brand-new temperature gauge in my Model C last summer and frankly I wish I had gone to a 195 (it had no thermostat in it whatsoever when I opened it up). I simply do not use it hard enough  for a 195 to ever be a problem here in the moderate climate of northern Idaho.

If I lived in a warmer climate and used it for its original design purpose of bona-fide farming pulling a plow, etc. at heavy throttle settings, then a 160 would probably be about ideal.

Thanks for the replies. I live in Wisconsin and the D14 has a loader on it. We mainly use it in winter/cooler months and use it for moving logs to the sawmill and moving snow and dirt. No field work for sure. Does that change anyone's opinion? I will shoot the block with an IR this weekend. Great idea!
