We have a D14 that the main drive shaft for the PTO, not the shaft out of the back of the tractor, is twisted and the collar that disengages and engages the PTO will not slide back onto the twisted drive shaft to disengage. Can this shaft be removed without removing the hydraulic pump? The manual I have says to remove the hydraulic pump, but this is to remove the PTO drive gear, we would like to just remove and swap or repair the twisted shaft? If so, how is it done? Thanks

Have saw rear shaft twisted, but never the front.
Drain oil and pull rear shaft then see if coupler will slide. Yes that shaft can be removed without removing pump. MACK |

Thanks for the reply, its definitely the front short shaft twisted, we have already split the tractor, and the collar slides great on the long shaft that goes out the rear of tractor. However the short shaft that goes up into the torque tube, the collar slides good until it reaches the last 1/2 inch of travel, then it binds tight, in this position the collar is barely on the rear PTO shaft, so it won't disengage the PTO. Also when it binds you can no longer move the shifter leaver at all. Looking at the short shaft that is twisted, I can't tell that its twisted at all, but the collar looks like new and it sure binds up tight.
So, if we pull the snap ring retaining the short main drive shaft bearing, will the shaft then slide out? The book shows a spacer on the other side of the drive gear that the shaft goes thru, will this spacer stay in place for the replacement of the shaft?

If I remember right, remove the snap ring that holds bearing race, use a slide hammer to pull shaft and bearing. MCAK

Twisted mine in D/14.Pulled pto shaft ,pulled side plate and removed snap ring ,pulled freeze plug in front and bumped it out .Strighten spline with side grinder and put back in.Made a jig and drove snap ring from rear.Had pull combine for years but hitting stumps with bush hog twisted it .I put clutch on bush hog . Problem solved. Did not split tractor.
