I wonder why they installed the rear wheel centers backwards?

I've never seen a D-12 with a Hand Clutch before - Image 4.

But I have seen lots of D-14's like that, with no thumb guard.

They are not really backwards. That is one option for setting tread width. Albeit a very uncommon one in this day and age.
