I just got a call from a fellow that has a D17 with loader he wants to sell. It is an LP version, has not run in the last three years and needs a new tube in one rear tire. It's not stuck and should start up with a battery.  What should I offer for it??  He's thinking around $1500.

I went and had a look at it and it appears to be an unmolested late Series 1.   Fenders and the rest of the sheet metal are excellent. Original Allis loader in decent shape. Rear tires are worn but useable. Fronts are good. It's an original LP wide front, not a conversion. Still has original generator and charging system. I wasn't able to drive it yet as the owner was not there and there is no battery.  The owner sold the property and needs to get rid of the tractor as he has no further use for it. Last run three years ago.

I bought it for the $1500 and will pick it up later today.

What issues should I be looking for with the LP etc??

LP burns a little leaner than gas and can be hard on valves.I would be more concerned with transmission, power director.Does tractor come out of 3rd or 4th gear going downhill? Does power director snap in and out strong? these things can be more costly than a valve job.

i've got it home; still on the trailer and raining. Bonus--it's got factory power steering. Fellow I bought it from is the son of the original owner, who still has his WD that he bought before the D 17.  They bought it new in '62 and he has pics of himself on the tractor when he was four years old.  He said the power director worked OK, but the clutch may need replacing.  For what I paid I think I can play with it a little. I have a set of almost new rear tires in my shed for it that I have been storing for a few years now.

You did good. If it needs LP parts, they may be a little hard to find if you stay with the original Ensign brand parts.

Serial number is 30343, which makes it a '60. It has the black bar grille. Here is a pic.

Excellent looking tractor there!  Has the fully hydraulic loader too.  The loader itself is worth more than what you paid for the tractor!

That is a very nice looking tractor. You got a steal on that thing. If you get bored with it you can always send it our way lol. Have fun with your new toy. Blake
