Trying to breathe some life into a D 15 gas tractor . Serial D15 2595 . Think that makes it a 1961 year model . Hard to believe , but the oil filter's so rusted I can't read it . Anyone know the filter number ? THANKS !!

probably a FRAM C159 ? kinda 'the' oil filter...on my D-14s.

Didn't look up the serial number but if it's a series 2 (oval muffler) you can use the same oil filter as your old ford truck. Think the motorcraft number fl1a. That's if the threads are internal. The Fram 159 is right for a series 1 and will have large male threads.

All D-15 gassers use a Fram PH-8A type filter, which isn't the same as a D-14.

THANKS for the replies , it's a Series one with 149 ? cubic inch motor . Fram site doesn't list D 15 on the PH-8A page for some reason . I'll see if I can buy one and compare it to the old one . THANKS , again .

PH8A is what we always used on the D17.

Remove the old one; if it has a metal tube that goes into it you need the C159; if not use the PH-8A

Oddly enough a PH8A fits my the 22R in my Toyota as well! Makes it easy to member' filters when they are all the same!

PH8A is the same as Motorcraft FL1A and Wix 51515. If you want a shorter length filter FL300 has the same base. This filter is also used on Chrysler 318 and 360.

If you wanted smaller diameter for some reason FL400 also has the same base as the FL1A/FL300.

Beware of buying a filter only because the base fits. The bypass valve needs to be per OEM specs too.

Each one of the Motorcraft filters has a silicon anti drain back valve. There is no bypass valve in any oil filter, they simply use a spring in the end of the can to seat the filter media against the base. When the delta P is high enough the filter is lifted off the base against spring pressure. Here's where things get cheap on many filters. Fram and Champion Labs have the cheapest, weakest construction of oil filters. They use an element with glued cardboard on each end and to join both ends of the media. The spring is a stamped piece of metal in the end of the can. Wix and Motorcraft (Purolator) use crimped metal end caps with an actual coil spring in the end of the can. They also have more filter media and use a metal crimp to join the ends of the media.
To give you an idea of flow, the 1A is designed to accommodate the flow of an FE Ford at 6000 rpm. Same with the FL400, it's found on 3.5 V6 in the Explorer and Edge. All of these engines place far more pressure and flow demand on the filter than an old tractor engine that sees a maximum of 2000 rpm.
Flow demand is what got Fram in trouble with Cummins. As the 5.9 grew in Ram trucks so did the oil pump volume. The Fram filter media couldn't handle the volume and would tear allowing a piece of paper into the main oil gallery. The paper ended up in the back of the gallery and restrict flow to #6 cooling jet. The piston would then overheat and score the cylinder and loose compression. Fram bought several thousand 5.9's from Chrysler due to their lousy filter. Fram refused to recall the faulty filters and only redesigned it to handle the flow. The same thing happened when the 6.7 came along. Again Fram bought engines with scored #6 pistons with a piece of paper restricting the cooling jet. My point is the 226 is not going to come anywhere close to overwhelming the media in any of the automotive filters.

There is a pressure relief bypass valve in all quality oil filters.  They vary between 3 psi and somewhere around 17 psi, those I've compared for personal use. If you dig deep in the specs, the pressure will be listed.
