    Posted: 14 Aug 2014 at 11:36am
I have an Allis Chalmer model D grader serial # 6779 (1969)
It has a creeper gear that will not stay in high or low and I would like to know if I can remove the creeper gear without getting into the transmission.

I think that I have scanned a page of the blowup from my parts book. If I can find it I could send it to you or scan it again. From what I can see you can remove the auxiliary transmission without getting into the transmission and see what condition your sliding gear is in as that is most likely the problem. If that gear is the only one that is bad and a replacement is not available you might be able place the sliding gear into either the direct range or the creeper range (your choice) and permanently lock it into that position. My parts book is from the later round frame models but that section should still be applicable.

The creeper option uses a longer transmission input shaft and simply gears it down using an underdrive gear on it in the auxilliary box. So, if you're wanting to do away with it altogether then you'll have to change out the input shaft to get rid of the creeper housing and gears. But, you can do it the way that Don suggests if you don't want to or are unable to fix it correctly. Those creeper transmissions are pretty desirable. I know because I'm needing some parts for my Allis Chalmers M65 which uses some of the same gears. If you run across a parts machine or even a running machine (M65), let me know. I just need some transmission gears mainly, wouldn't need creeper gears right away.

Here's a free parts book in PDF for the D:

You can remove the auxiliary transmission without getting into the transmission but you need to do a little disassembly first so that the long top shaft stays in place in the transmission. You have to take off that bracket at the front which is actually the top shaft bearing cap. There should be a snap ring on the end of the top shaft that you have to remove before you can pull the auxiliary transmission off.

Hi.   I have the creeper trans. in my 1967 grader. The 'control rod'( P29, item 53) is used to move the hi/low assy.. It has a notch to lock the trans. into high. When you shift into low, you release the notched shifter and push it strait downward, and a spring maintains enough tension to hold it into low range. If you need further details, contact me and I can fax or E mail more information.    Ross.

I think my shift lever is home made its not like the one in my parts book the only spring is under the top cover and holds the detent ball down.

I took the top cover off of the creeper gear and every thing seemed to be ok except some wear in the bearings. Put in a new detent ball and stretched the spring. Drove it around about an hour and it seemed to be OK.
