Does anyone on this forum know the story on the Japanese crankshafts used in many Allis Chalmers engines- and were known to cause grief.  I would like to know when they started to be used, what engines were they used in, why, etc.  A local fellow had the crank break in his HD16, and I suspect it was one of the Japanese ones.

are you looking to find another?  i have a block with a crank in it i would let go very reasonably.  Im sure it needs reground but its in one piece.  It really depends on the year of his tractor, the tag is missing from the block but i suspect it may be an early crank with the smaller journals, but cant say for sure without putting a mic on it.  it was in the parts pile when i got my HD16

There is a Cleivite bearing website that has a lot of information about bearings, crankshafts, and connecting rods.

Allis Chalmers information starts around page 80

While working on my HD6 I bought a replacement connecting rod that was made in Japan.

It has already been repaired- I am just curious about these cranks.

I`ve also tried to get info on those Trev. From what I have gathered from past machine owners, most Mk II 17000 & 25000 had the bad Jap crankshaft identifiable with only 6 counterweights. They said the American made 12 counterweight shafts for 844 engines gave no problems at all.  Member BIG AL has posted on 844 truck engines, but I have not seen any comments from him on the cranks. At 450hp, you would quickly detect a bad crankshft!

Yeah, this was an old 16DP, but they had fitted a late model MK2 engine from a power plant or 945 loader or something- I can't remember exactly.  I know there was an outfit close by here that was running several 945B loaders- as soon as they came on the yard the Allis engine was removed and a Cummins installed, no matter what shape the engine was in.

After bottom end disasters with those bad cranks, some guys fitted the 12 counterweight shafts out of 16000 and 21000 engines, then had no more trouble. 855 Cummins Big Cams would be a very favourable option for repower. A gentleman has recently posted on Heavy Equipment Forums on his Cummins repower of an HD16B after his Japanese made crank was removed from the block in two halves

Cummins also has the L series engines from the 90's, a touch smaller in dimensions to a 855, they are only 10liter engines as opposed to the 14 of the big cams, could be a alternative choice.
